Heating and Cooling Degree Days

Degree days can be used to evaluate the effect of outdoor temperature on energy
use. A degree day compares the average outdoor temperature to a standard of
65 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cold days are measured in Heating Degree Days (HDD) where the accumulation
in degrees of the daily mean temperature was below 65 degrees F.

Hot days are measured in Cooling Degree Days (CDD) because it would require
the use of energy for cooling, the accumulation in degrees of the daily mean
temperature above 65 degrees F.
