New Solar Projects Awarded in El Paso

July 5, 2011

Two new solar projects will start to take shape soon in the El Paso area.  Contracts for solar installations at the Stanton Tower and the Wrangler Substation have been signed.  The projects are part of a $10 million commitment that El Paso Electric made to build more solar power in the region through 2012.

“El Paso Electric is committed to integrating renewable energy into our generation mix,” said Rocky Miracle, Senior Vice President of Corporate Planning and Development at El Paso Electric.  “We also look forward to future solar projects and the opportunity for education and the growth of renewable energy technologies in our community.”
These additions will bring the total to more than 235 kW solar energy facilities owned by El Paso Electric.

Stanton Tower
Technology used: Mono Crystalline Silicon
The contract to install solar panels on the rooftop at the Stanton Tower was awarded to Border Solar.  The Stanton Tower is located in El Paso’s Downtown at 100 N. Stanton.  The building also serves as the corporate offices of El Paso Electric.  The system will generate 37 kW, enough to power approximately 11 homes per year. Construction will begin in July and is scheduled to be completed before the end of the year.

Wrangler Substation
Technology used: Concentrated Photovoltaic with Dual Axis Tracking
The contract to build a solar facility at the El Paso Electric Wrangler Substation was awarded to Solar Smart Living. The Wrangler Substation is located in East El Paso in the 1000 block of Don Haskins.  The selected technology is relatively new for the industry and is ideal for regions with high direct normal solar irradiance, such as El Paso. The system is expected to generate 52 kW, enough to power approximately 18 homes per year.  Construction will begin in July and is scheduled to be completed before the end of the year.
