New Mexico School District Raises the Bar for Environmental Stewardship

Gadsden ISD receives check for their energy saving efforts

Anthony, New Mexico – Gadsden Independent School District (GISD) will receive a check from El Paso Electric (EPE) for $91,186.07 for incentives earned in 2019 from EPE’s New Mexico SCORE Plus and Commercial Load Management Programs – it’s ninth year of energy saving success with EPE.

"Our Board of Education and the District is appreciative of the support El Paso Electric Company has given the district by establishing these energy saving programs that affect our new schools and those existing campuses that are retrofitted. Funds that we save on energy consumption go back into the district operating funds which help us provide the best facilities and a quality education for all our students,” said GISD Superintendent Travis Dempsey.

GISD was able to save 584,187 kWh in 2019 which equates to powering 48 homes for one year in the EPE service area, removing 89 cars off the road according to the Environmental Protection Agency standards, abating CO2 emissions from 956 barrels of oil, or sequestering carbon for one year by 536 acres of forests.

Since joining the NM SCORE Plus Program in 2011, GISD has completed numerous energy efficiency projects. In 2019, GISD installed high-efficiency lighting, new cooling systems and EnergyStar commercial kitchen equipment at several schools throughout the district for an incentive of $77,446.07. GISD also participated in the inaugural season of the Commercial Load Management Program, limiting their average electricity demand throughout the district for an additional incentive of $13,470.

“Gadsden Independent School District is a shining example of how our customers should be utilizing our energy efficiency programs and using them to their full potential,” shares EPE interim Chief Executive Officer Adrian J. Rodriguez. “We congratulate the school district on their efforts and savings and look forward to our continued partnership.”

In 2018, EPE reported a sum of 42,587 MWh of energy savings all attributed to the Utility’s Energy Efficiency programs which helped avoid more than 24,000 tons of CO2 emissions and conserve more than 20 million gallons of water.

About the SCORE Plus Program

The SCORE Plus Program helps schools save energy and money by providing no-cost building system analysis, technical recommendations and financial incentives based on the total amount of energy the district will save. Additionally, the SCORE Plus Program provides district-wide facility energy benchmarking and energy master planning workshops.

About the Commercial Load Management Program

The Commercial Load Management Program is a voluntary curtailment of electric consumption during peak demand periods of June through September in return for incentives. All these resources provide more cost-effective facilities for GISD, as well as an improved learning environment for its students.
