Macho Springs Solar Facility

Macho Springs Solar facility, located in Luna County, New Mexico, will be a 50 MW AC ground mounted single-axis tracking PV system that will interconnect to EPE 345-kV Luna- Springville transmission line via Macho Spring Substation. The Purchase Power Agreement is between Macho Springs Solar, LLC (owned by First Solar) and El Paso Electric (EPE).  The contractual Commercial Operation Date (COD) is May 1, 2014.

This project is the result of EPE’s request for proposal for electric peaking power supply where seller offered to provide solar energy and associated capacity attributes and RECs from the facility to EPE.

Project Milestones:

  • Contract life: 20 years
  • NMPRC Approval: May 1, 2013
  • Construction Ground Break:  July 1, 2013
  • Expected Commercial Operation Date: May 1, 2014

All Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) associated with the Solar energy will be owned by EPE.

The Macho Springs Solar Power Facility will generate enough clean energy to power more than 17,000 average homes. The project will displace more than 40,000 metric tons of CO2, the equivalent of taking 7,500 cars off the road.
