El Paso Electric, EEI Celebrate 1 Million Electric Vehicles on U.S. Roads

El Paso Electric (EPE) today joins the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) in marking the milestone of one million electric vehicles (EVs) on U.S. roads. As cities and communities seek smart, sustainable mobility solutions, electric transportation is a critical component – including EVs, public transit, and charging infrastructure. Electric transportation meets customer needs, provides environmental benefits, and supports America’s energy security.

At the same time EEI celebrates a major mile-marker for EVs in the United States, EPE unveils the region’s first utility-led EV website. This EV website provides information from simple explanations on EVs, to where you can charge your EV in our region, and incentives vehicle shoppers can take advantage of in both Texas and New Mexico.

“El Paso Electric has an established record of growth and evolution to help meet customer needs in our region, and electric vehicles are no exception to the utility’s mission,” expressed EPE Vice President of Renewable Development Richard Turner. “As the trend for EV is expected to continue growing across the country, EPE is pleased to launch a website that will serve as a helpful resource to anyone interested in learning about EVs.”

With the transition to EVs fully underway, a new report released by EEI and the Institute for Electric Innovation (IEI), Electric Vehicle Sales and the Charging Infrastructure Required Through 2030, projects that U.S. EV sales will exceed 3.5 million vehicles in 2030, reaching more than 20 percent of annual vehicle sales.

“The future of electric transportation is evolving rapidly with more than 1 million EVs on our nation’s roads today,” said EEI President Tom Kuhn. “As demand for EVs continues to grow, America’s electric companies are leading efforts to promote electric vehicles. Electric transportation is a win-win, meeting customer needs while also supporting America’s energy security and sustainability.”

EEI’s IEI report projects that more than 18 million EVs are anticipated to be on the road in the U.S. in 2030. Customer needs across the country on EV infrastructure will continue to grow. EPE’s launch of the new EV website is a precursory initiative to help address the growing EV trend across the country.
