El Paso Electric (EPE) has received calls pertaining to a scam that preys on EPE customers. The scam artists represent themselves to be EPE employees and tell customers their account is past due. Then, they attempt to convince the customer to go to a local store and purchase a cash card (Visa, Master Card or American Express) and to call them back with a card number or they offer to send someone to the home to collect the card.
El Paso Electric reminds customers to only use EPE-authorized methods to pay their electric bill. Customers are urged to never give personal information over the telephone unless the customer initiates the contact with El Paso Electric. Finally, El Paso Electric urges those who believe they have been the victim of a scam involving payment of electric service to contact the police department.
