Power On. Ideas to Save Money!

February 10, 2014

It is never too early to start planning for warmer weather as spring is quickly approaching. Here are some helpful ideas to save money in your home or business.

Saving Tip #1: Did you know you could save as much as 10 percent a year on your heating and cooling by simply turning your thermostat back 10 to 15 degrees for eight hours?

Using a programmable thermostat with a preset schedule can help you save energy and
Money while you are asleep or at work. These types of thermostats can also store multiple daily settings to help you adjust the times you need to have your heating or air conditioning turned on.

Saving Tip #2: Plant trees to provide shade and moderate the temperature in your home or business, which can save money on your overall utility bill. Trees whose leaves fall seasonally are the best types of trees to plant near windows since about three-quarters of the heat in our homes or businesses come through windows. However, be mindful not to plant them where they could possibly block the sun during the winter.

We always recommend planting native species of trees from our region. While trees help our environment, our community should be careful not to plant new trees too close to utility lines. Trees with spreading crowns should be at least 25 feet away from power lines. It is also never a good idea to plant trees near transformers or any underground or overhead lines. Also, do not trim trees that are tangled or located near power lines. Please call (915) 877-3400 in Texas or (575) 523-7591 in New Mexico to help you trim your trees safely.
