Preparing for Outages

Before an outage occurs

Here are some things you can do before an outage occurs to make it easier for you and your family to get through the outage.

  • Prepare an outage kit that includes flashlights, battery-powered or wind-up alarm clock, battery-powered radio, extra batteries, a manual can opener and first aid kit.
  • Know the location of your home’s fuse box or circuit box.
  • Cordless phones don’t work if the power is out. Have a standard phone or cell phone as a backup.
  • Automatic garage door openers don’t work if the power is out. Check the instruction booklet for manual override.

During an outage

Here are some steps you can take when your power goes out:

Check It Out. If your power goes out during a storm, check your circuit breakers or fuse box to make sure the problem isn’t inside your home. If the problem isn’t inside your home, check with your neighbors. If power is out around you, call EPE. You don’t need to call more than once, unless your neighbors have power restored and you don’t. EPE crews will work around the clock, if necessary, to restore service.

Avoid opening the refrigerator and freezer doors. A full, unopened freezer should keep food frozen up to 48 hours. Food should stay cold in an unopened refrigerator for 24 hours.

Disconnect appliances that would go on automatically when power is restored or that may become damaged due to voltage irregularities. These appliances include computers, VCRs, televisions, stereos, and answering machines.

Candles can be fire hazards. Never place them near flammable materials and never leave them unattended.

Don’t go near downed lines. In the case of a severe windstorm, be careful when you go outside, especially if you see that tree limbs have been blown down. Both high winds and tree branches can bring wires down too. If you spot a downed power line, assume it is electrified, even if it isn’t sparking. Call EPE immediately and warn others to stay away from the area.
