El Paso Electric and NextEra Energy Resources celebrate commissioning of New Mexico’s largest solar energy center

OTERO COUNTY, New Mexico - April 5, 2023 – Local leaders, community members and partners joined executives from El Paso Electric and NextEra Energy Resources, LLC to celebrate the commissioning of the Buena Vista Energy Center, the largest solar facility in the El Paso Electric (EPE) service region and the largest in the state of New Mexico.

“This powerful relationship alongside NextEra Energy Resources demonstrates the shared vision of El Paso Electric of powering the next hundred years of growth, innovation and economic vibrancy,” said Kelly Tomblin, president and chief executive officer of EPE. “In 2016, we proudly took the step to generate electricity 100% coal-free. In 2021, we made a bold commitment to our customers to transform the energy landscape by 2023 and that continues today.”

The Buena Vista Energy Center spans 1,200 acres located near the community of Chaparral, New Mexico, and will generate up to 120 megawatts (MW) of solar energy, combined with 50 MW of battery energy storage. The energy center, which was developed and will be operated by a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources, will generate enough electricity to power approximately 60,000 homes.

Construction of the site generated a significant economic boost to Otero County and the state, creating approximately 150 construction jobs and stimulating the purchase of regional goods and services from local vendors. The energy center will provide many economic benefits for Otero County, including enhancements to local roads, schools and services.

"This solar energy center will generate low-cost, clean energy and provide millions of dollars in additional tax revenue for the county over the next 30 years,” said J.D. Rulien, director of development at NextEra Energy Resources, the world's largest generator of renewable energy from the wind and sun, and a world leader in battery storage. "We are pleased to work with El Paso Electric to bring online New Mexico’s newest and largest solar energy center."
