SCAM ALERT: El Paso Electric Continues to See a Rise in Scams

Scammers masking El Paso Electric’s Customer Service number

 EL PASO, Texas – El Paso Electric Company (EPE) continues to see an increase in the number of scam calls over the last month with over 150 reports. Scammers are masking calls to customers to make it appear as if it was originated by EPE as well as resembling the customer service phone number. Each scam reported involved an automated message directing customers to call back a “1-800” number to make an outstanding payment.

Customers are advised to not call this “1-800” number provided or give out any personal information as well as make any payment over the phone. Customers are encouraged to hang up immediately and call an EPE Customer Service number to verify their account information. EPE Customer Service will never initiate a call to a customer requesting personal information, demand payment via phone with prepaid debit cards, or ask to return a call to a number that is not affiliated with EPE.

EPE also encourages customers to report any possible scams to their local authorities.

EPE recommends the following tips to protect customers from potential scams:

• Be suspicious of any call asking for payment, especially if they require payment with a prepaid debit card. EPE has various payment methods through authorized payment options.
• EPE will never direct customers to an exclusive location to handle payment with a prepaid debit card.
• If there are any questions regarding the authenticity of the caller claiming to represent EPE, report the issue at (915) 543-5970, (575) 526-5555 or call toll free at (800) 592-1634.
• Do not offer any confidential information unless the customer initiated the contact with EPE customer service at one of the above numbers.
