TCEQ Approves El Paso Electric's Air Permit for Newman Unit 6

Today, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) issued El Paso Electric’s (EPE) air permit for Newman Unit 6. The issuance of the air permit authorizes EPE to begin construction of the state-of-the-art 228-megawatt (MW) natural gas replacement unit at the existing Newman Power Station. EPE’s generation portfolio will also include an additional 270 MW from renewable energy resources, including solar and battery storage. The total 498 MW of replacement and new generation is necessary to meet EPE’s customers’ growing energy needs while replacing older units with cleaner energy. As EPE celebrates 120 years of service by powering the region’s businesses and homes, it is an honor, privilege, and responsibility to reliably and affordably meet the energy demands customers expect and deserve today and into the future. All new generation is expected to be operational by summer 2023.
